The original oak woods in central and south-east mounds of the Kyjov region were almost entirely cut down almost a thousand years ago and turned into fields, orchards and vineyards. The prominent remnant of the thermophilic oak woods is **Hovoranský grove** (Hovorany), which, apart from several interesting plant species, hosts a major population of stag beetle. **Hovorany meadows** are located nearby – steep grassy slopes above waterless valley, one of the prominent localities with steppe meadows in Moravia. Part of a bird area designed to protect one of the last occurrences of bunting (Emberiza hortulana) in this country.
